Every storm passes, and what follows is its own kind of music. LCSO closes its season with a program built entirely around that quiet aftermath: Gluck's serene Dance of the Blessed Spirits, George Walker's elegiac Lyric for Strings (written in memory of his grandmother, and the piece that helped make Walker the first Black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music), the wistful ache of Sibelius' Valse Triste, the hushed atmosphere of Fauré's Pelléas et Mélisande Suite, and Wagner's Siegfried Idyll — a piece he wrote as a birth announcement for his infant son, and one of the tenderest, most hopeful pieces of music he ever composed.
This isn't a finale built on spectacle. It's one built on healing — five composers, each finding their own way toward peace after difficulty, closing the season on a note of quiet renewal.
