Klaus Simon is a German conductor, pianist, and arranger whose work focuses on 19th- and 20th-century repertoire. He has become known for his chamber arrangements of orchestral works, making large-scale symphonic music accessible to smaller ensembles without losing the essence of the original compositions.
For Roots & Resonance, LCSO will perform Simon’s chamber orchestration of Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. This arrangement reduces the size of the orchestra to roughly 14–17 players while retaining the symphony’s delicate textures, harmonic complexity, and characteristic orchestral color. Each musician has a prominent role, allowing audiences to hear details and interactions that can be more easily missed in full symphonic performances.
Simon’s arrangements are widely respected in the European and American contemporary classical scene. He carefully adapts the music to preserve its emotional arc while highlighting the interplay between instruments, making the works highly engaging for chamber orchestras and audiences alike.
For LCSO’s May 8 concert, this performance is a rare opportunity to hear a Mahler symphony in a chamber context, emphasizing clarity, precision, and the subtle beauty of each instrumental voice.
